What to Expect

Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) exams are relatively painless, and are a non-invasive way to take x-ray images of the esophagus, stomach, and small intestines. For this exam, the patient ingests barium, a white chalky liquid that coats the upper GI tract to allow for images of the ingestion process in motion.

  • Upon arrival, you will be asked to fill out the required paperwork.
  • One of our friendly Technologists will show you to our dressing room and give you time to change into a gown.
  • Lockers are provided in the dressing room to secure your personal items.
  • The Technologist will then escort you into our Fluoroscopy suite where you will be asked to first ingest a carbonated drink to expand your stomach and then a thick barium which coats the gastrointestinal tract.
  • You will be asked to lay on the exam table while the x-ray equipment takes images. You may be asked to reposition yourself multiple times to make sure the barium is coating your gastrointestinal tract.
  • After the initial images, you will be asked to swallow a thinned out version of barium so the Technologist can take images of your swallowing motion in real time.
  • If you are a parent of a child receiving the exam, you may be able to stay with your child but will be asked to wear a protective lead apron.
  • Once your exam is completed, you can resume normal activity.
  • You may experience stool discoloration for 48-72 hours after the procedure due to the barium.
  • Your images are looked at by our Radiologist, and a report will then be issued to your referring Physician.
